ToT Training for Farmer leaders 14th to 19 June 2010
Small scale farmers leaders to be trained on production and regional policies
ACORD (Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development) which is a Pan-African Organization working for social justice and development in Africa will conduct a trainer of trainers (ToT) workshop in Kenya. The training workshop to be held from 16th – 19th June 2010, at Egerton Univeristy, Nakuru, Kenya will bring together more than 30 farmer leaders from Eastern and Southern Africa.
The Eastern and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF) will be represented by farmer leaders from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi. Other representatives are from Namibia, Rwanda, Mozambique and Ethiopia.
According to Emime Ndihokubwayo who is a Head of Policy and Advocacy says the training workshop is part of ACORD’s broad work programme aimed at enhancing food security in Africa through capacity and skills development and policy advocacy. The specific objectives of the training are to:
· improve small-scale farmers and pastoralists knowledge on crop and livestock production methods, sustainable land and water management practices, and agricultural policies and policy frameworks;
· increase skills of small-scale farmers and pastoralists to access markets;
· increase capacity of small-scale farmer and pastoralist organizations to develop and disseminate agricultural information and practices to their members (women and men);
· strengthen capacity of small-scale farmer and pastoralist organizations to engage in Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and AU Pastoralist Policy Framework (PPF) processes;
Headquartered in Nairobi, ACORD runs various programmes in 18 countries in Africa with major focus on livelihoods and food sovereignty, Gender, HIV/AIDS and Conflict. ACORD has over three decades’ experience working on livelihood and food sovereignty issues in Africa and the growing threat posed by global processes to the welfare of marginalized communities such as women, small scale farmers, pastoralists and artisanal fisher folks.
The training is funded by the the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
